Brooks if you want your face removed just let me know. Connie...I don't care. |
The self proclaimed defender of Southern Heritage chimes in on Dr. Simpson's recent post with a flurry of her own defensive rhetoric, aka vomit. This post entitled, "Damnyankees Attack. Southerners Defend." is the latest of the spew. Historically this title is wrong; the South fired first, carried out some invasions of their own, and ultimately lost. Connie professed in the past that she cares not for history and instead values subjective heritage. Taking this into account, it becomes obvious that Connie's title is commentary of the strife between herself and Professor Simpson. I once thought Connie carried sentimental feelings for Kevin Levin. She used to go on and on about him reminding me of the flirtatious young students I have in class. It seems that Connie directs her attention towards Brooks Simpson now. She writes about him constantly (romance novel forthcoming) and reads his posts everyday with a scented candle and red wine.
With that aside I think it is interesting to read the two posts above. Connie refers to Dr. Simpson's work as merely a critique or rather unjustified snarky commentary (paraphrase) on "Southern Heritage," (in quotes due to irony). It is easily noticed by viewing the website cwcrossroards that Dr. Simpson writes about a multitude of things. It just happens that Southern Heritage is one of them. Connie seems to be flabbergasted as to why. Now I could cite Michel-Rolph Trouillot's book Silencing the Past: Power and the Production of History which calls for Historians to stand and meet the injustices of pseudo history to answer 'why,' but I do not think I will. Mainly because those that have not read it would not understand, and because certain groups would simply disregard it as revisionists history. Odd that it is usually those that have not read the article are usually the first to discredit it. In short I will simply say that maybe Dr. Simpson's approach to "Southern Heritage," parallels Richard Dawkins approach to ardent Creationists; he just cannot believe they are that dumb.
Replace "Creationist"s with "Southern Heritage Folks," "Evolution" with "History," and "Bible verses" with "Random Southern quotes." |
Of course this cannot go on anymore. Connie Chastain, the woman that defends Southern Heritage has gone underground. She deleted people from her group that posed a threat (disagreed) and blocked viewing permissions to her group. "Damnyankees Attack.....Southerners Flee".....makes sense given the large amounts of desertion in the Rebel Army during the Civil War.
I feel like it's not even on us to answer "why?". It's usually on the person making the claim to provide the evidence and prove their claim, connie is actively trying to reverse the rolls and make us prove what is already established by disregarding all of our evidence.
ReplyDeleteI think the dr.s approach is correct, he does not have to answer her why, she instead needs to provide ample evidence that her claim is correct. It's no ones job to prove a negative you can't prove a negative, but she needs to prove her affirmative (spoiler: she cant).
Joey you are essentially right. She does that in every conversation. She wants you to prove to her what is already known. She will then claim that this "revisionism" is inflicting its history on the South. Which simply isn't true. The current scholarship is a correction from pre-1960's scholarship.

ReplyDeleteI'm sorry but this is such a joke. Thanks for bringing it to my attention though as I plan on writing a response to such foolishness.
DeleteRecently, I’ve been carrying on random conversations with Rob about a variety of issues, and somehow we’ve managed to agree on several – which may mean the world is truly ending this year, or that Rob and I have finally figured out a way to speak to each other as opposed to past each other. In any case, I can safely say that I’ve been on the blunt end of an argument with Rob (et al, at times) – sometimes to the point where some of my friends who do not even know Rob, will all stop talking to me for large chunks of time because I have nothing else to say except – “I can’t talk to you, I’m thinking!?”
ReplyDeleteI say all of that to say this – we’ve managed to find something else to agree on, Ms. Chastain and other advocates like her are bananas. Seriously, crazy and ignorant – and my only hope is that anyone with half a working brain realizes that she and other advocates like her at not at all historians, and are just foolish promoters for an alternative history of the U.S. which fits their world view, and only their world view.
From my view, Ms. Chastain spends more time writing snarky commentary on a variety of other blogs and character bashing than writing anything of substance. My advice, keep to writing fiction because you seem to have a knack for it. It seems safe to assume that she doesn’t realize that historians look at new information with, like, you know, a fine toothed comb – in order to write about it and explain it. Dr. Simpson, Rob, etc. will never agree with you, Ms. Chastain, because you’re wrong. They have the credentials to back up their arguments, and you only have the kind of facts that are found in your heart. From what I can see you spend more time distracting people with silly things like IP addresses and blog names than anything that would remotely make sense towards your argument. My guess is that even with all of the will power in the world it’s hard to ignore the nonsense that is said on these Southern Heritage blogs – exhibit A: After reading these things and discussing some of them with folks, even I couldn’t stay away.
Then that VA blog referenced in the comments is just asinine. Not only has this person reduced that book to a quote likely out of context, but I can't tell if that's saying "Hey if you write facts, that's too boring." or "Hey if you approach history from the point of view of someone I don't agree with, well it's just apologetic nonsense." My guess is that explaining to this person that state building requires some pretty elaborate myths and not necessarily historical fact in order to get the loyalty and obedience of the constituents would be an exercise in futility. Yes, just like the state building of the Confederacy – or that of these United States – or France, or Egypt, or I would run out of space. Historians have a different job than politicians, and it is one that should be respected because a good historian is one that looks at things from an objective perspective - something none of these wackos can even begin to claim.
Exactly what is it that would make you happy, Ms. Chastain and others? Another civil war? How can you prove your point – you are, at best, at the very margins of intellectual thought, which sadly has to be explained nonetheless, and you and yours are seen by most as a laughable source of entertainment because of your uncompromising belief of shit that never happened? Not only, are you all giving “them” so much credit with your conspiratorial theories of how the world works, but you also really need to go to therapy to figure out what exactly it is that bothers you about “losing power” or having a more diverse country?

Not real sure what you are referencing in this statement:
DeleteFrom what I can see you spend more time distracting people with silly things like IP addresses and blog names than anything that would remotely make sense towards your argument.
I do not have any posts that I can think of that play to the notion of IP addresses. Makes your point pretty moot. I have been known however, to make the snarky commentary on the situation, which is what you see above.
As far as the point about paying attention to the "Southern Heritage" blogs, it's mainly due to the misrepresentation of history.
